The Future
Welcome back, everyone! We’ve got a lot to cover in this devlog as we chart out the future of Shadows, talk about our upcoming updates, and share some exciting plans for the long term. Here’s a breakdown of what’s coming.
The Future: What’s Next for Shadows?
We’re pushing forward to turn our current prototype into a full-length, feature-packed title. The next major release will be Prototype 1.0 (p1.0), and it will be the last free version of the game. After this, we’ll be moving towards building a premium, complete game.
For now, we’re introducing a new versioning structure. Our current release is Prototype 0.1 (p0.1), and with each major milestone, we’ll bump up the versioning until we hit p1.0.
We will also be launching a Patreon alongside p1.0. This will allow you to support the development and gain access to early builds and other perks. We’ll share more info on the Patreon soon, so stay tuned!
The Next Update: Prototype 0.2 (Coming September 28, 2024)
On Saturday, September 28th, 2024, we’re rolling out Prototype 0.2 (p0.2). This update will focus on quality-of-life improvements, a macOS port, and some tweaks based on player feedback.
Here’s a look at what’s coming in p0.2:
- Porting to macOS: We’re expanding platform support so more players can jump in!
- Tutorial Overhaul: We’re revamping the tutorial to make the learning curve smoother and gameplay mechanics clearer.
- Starter Weapon Update: The clunky starter weapon is being replaced with a more streamlined semi-automatic pistol.
- Weapon Drops: From now on, you’ll be picking up your additional weapons directly from enemies and the environment.
- Unarmed Combat: Fight with your fists and disarm enemies.
- Revolver Buff: Expect higher damage output for the revolver.
- Aim Assist: We’re experimenting with a few aim assist styles that you can toggle between, from a centering assist to a “traditional” mode that aligns shots with the camera rather than the gun.
- CPU/Memory Optimization: Significant amounts of game code have been and continue to be rewritten from Blueprint to C++, streamlining a few performance blunders along the way.
- Graphics Settings: You'll be able to the tune the game a bit more for performance on your system.
In addition to the gameplay changes, we’re opening up a public Discord with the release of p0.2. Join us to discuss the game, give feedback, and connect with other players.
Looking Ahead to Prototype 1.0 (p1.0)
As we approach p1.0, expect even bigger changes and new features to lay the foundation for a full release:
- Bug Fixes: We’re fixing issues like switching to an invisible, broken gun and cleaning up performance to streamline the executable.
- Multiplayer: We’re adding multiplayer modes! Get ready for:
- Capture the Flag
- Deathmatch
- Endless Mode Co-op
- New Enemy Types: We’re working on a few new enemy types, including melee-focused enemies and flying threats.
- Expanded Endless Mode: Zombies, power-ups, and new maps are coming your way.
- Stealth AI Improvements: We’re refining the enemy AI to make stealth more immersive and rewarding.
- Offhand Abilities: In addition to the throwing knife, you’ll soon be able to equip other abilities for your offhand.
- New Multiplayer Guns: We’ll be adding more firearms for competitive multiplayer gameplay.
- Level 3 Overhaul: Level 3 is being rebuilt from the ground up to be less laggy and not just an asset.
Beyond Prototype 1.0: The Road to Full Release
While p1.0 will be the last free prototype, we’re excited about what’s coming next. We’re considering releasing new multiplayer maps and guns for free under the p-series updates, but that’s still under discussion.
One thing we’re confident about: the game will support custom maps. You’ll be able to load maps via .pak
files, opening up opportunities for community-made content.
As we push toward the full release, we’re working on a polished single-player campaign, refined multiplayer modes, and mod support. There will also be free multiplayer weekends for players to try out the game and offer feedback as we go.
We’re committed to keeping you all updated, with frequent posts here and regular content on YouTube, so be sure to subscribe!
That’s it for this devlog! Thank you for your continued support and feedback as we work to build Shadows into something truly special. We’ll see you on September 28th with Prototype 0.2—mark your calendars!
