P0.2 - New Weapon - AK - Experimenting with new Outline Shader
Hey Shadows fans,
Really small update for you guys today, still recovering but doing much better. I'm going to be diving into the new weapon switcher & unarmed combat tomorrow, and I'm going to release P0.2 on the weekend without a few things like the AI improvements and come back to those in P0.3 - plans have been shaken up a bit by this unexpected setback but we are adapting the roadmap and pushing ahead.
We've decided that we are going to add some anachronistic weapons so long as they could be generally plausible to be built within the era. One of these anachronistic weapons is quite iconic, and gives us an opportunity to test out our fully automatic gameplay and the way assault rifles handle in the game.
We are going to be totally redoing the reload animations for this weapon, however, this is likely the state it will release in P0.2 in. At present it only has a tactical reload, no animation for priming the weapon etc.
It's pretty fun to use despite being a bit janky. Several tasks have been added to our tracker for the animations and for general polish for this weapon, in the P1.0 final polish sprint.
As well, I've been experimenting with a new outline shader you can see in the clip below. It looks a bit better in my opinion while adding a lot less visual clutter. Keeping in mind we will be using custom and much more stylized assets going forward -- I think the old shader was cool because it exaggerated outlines on flat textures to add more stylization to various scanned assets, but the new shader is way cleaner and less cluttered and that benefit of the old one won't be needed in the future. As well, the new one seems to perform better. So, because they were "artistically designed with the old shader in mind" (hacked together for a game jam using the old shader as a crutch), I am leaving the old one in most of the demo campaign for now, but building new maps with the new one.
